Sixers & Bucks: "Mission Accomplished"

May 20th cannot come fast enough. Well I guess it can for Andrew Wiggins, or whoever will be picked by the seller-dwellers of professional basketball. A phrase to describe the 2013-14 76ers & Milwaukee Bucks could be: "mission accomplished." It is no secret the objective of the season for both franchises was to lose as many games as possible to get the best chance at the first pick in the draft, or at least a top pick to give the team a major chance to become great.

But does it really matter?

The Bucks (somehow) finished with the worst record in the NBA. I say somehow because of how horribly the Sixers threw the season away at the trade deadline and employed a bunch of d-leaguers. As the worst team in the NBA, they have a 25% chance of getting the first pick, highest among all 14 lottery teams. Any 3rd grader realizes that is still a 75% chance of not getting it. Not only is there a better chance of them not getting it, but of all the possible picks they could have, which is 1-4, probability is in favor of them getting the 4th pick at a 35.7%.

And the Sixers? They also have a better chance at 4th at 31.9%. They even have a better chance at 1 than they do 2, by .1%.

How about that 4th to last team, the Utah Jazz? The Sixers and Bucks take up well over half the percentage of the 4th pick so they must have the rest, right? Utah ends up with a 9.9% chance at no. 4.

Here is the rest of this corrupt system:

This draft is a endless pool of talent. You won't see tanking like this for a long time, believe me. But it is still a disgrace to the NBA that you do not see in any other sport, with exception to the Houston Astros, who have been tanking for years.

So do you get rid of the lottery so the worst team actually gets what they deserve? I think you would see teams just stand around and blatantly lose the game on purpose. That would only make it worse.

Do you change the draft to a wheel system where teams get a top 5 pick every 6 years and the number 1 pick every 30? This could never work because the top team should have absolutely no chance to get the first pick, and I doubt the NBA will have 30 even teams for 30 years. This process would need an unfair makeover somewhere down the road.

Teams tank because they know there is no way they can keep up with the elites during an 82-game season. But how about a 50-game season? Give the bad teams more motivation to work toward championship potential in one season. The NFL, MLB, and NHL all have teams that come out of nowhere and compete. The NBA does not have that because when it comes down to it, teams realize it is better to suck and then develop future stars. You don't need an 82-game season to prove the Heat and Pacers are 10 games better than everyone else in the East.

But before you do that, make the first round or maybe even first two rounds of the Playoffs a best of 5 game series. Give the lower seeds a better chance. March Madness gets attention through the upsets. The NBA could too.

I am not naive. I know this will never happen. All this would do is reduce the amount of money being brought in through ticket sales, something the NBA does not want to risk. But the NFL is the most prosperous league through sponsors, and their teams play 16 games a year. Making each game more meaningful could be the key.

2014 NHL Award Nominations

Hart Trophy (MVP):

1. Sidney Crosby
MVP is supposed to go to the most valuable player to his team. But it never does. The Penguins would still be great without Crybaby, but he had the most outstanding year by far.

2. Ryan Getzlaf
A lot of people think Ovechkin should be here. Those people are crazy and know nothing about hockey.

3. Claude Giroux
Giroux was the most valuable player to his team, easily. The Flyers would be nothing without him.

Vezina Trophy (Goalie)

1. Tuuka Rask
Stood on his head the 2nd half of the year and lead Boston to a Presidents Trophy and the title of scariest team in the NHL. He definitely deserves the hardware.

2. Semyon Varlamov
Probably the most questionable character in the NHL after that whole kidnapping his wife thing. But awards are won (or in this case not won) by what you do on the ice, not off.

3. Ben Bishop
Bishop was the Vezina winner for most of the season until the Bruins went on their tear.

Norris Trophy (defenseman)

1. Shea Webber

2. Erik Karlsson

3. Duncan Keith

Honorary nomination to Andrew MacDonald since he lead the league in blocked shots.

Calder Trophy (Rookie)

1. Nathon MacKinnon
No brainer

2. Ondrej Palat
Did you think we would nominate someone from the Lightning other than Drouin?

3. Hampus Lindholm

Where's Seth Jones?

Selke Trophy (Defensive Forward)

1. Patrice Bergeron
There's a reason he and Kreci lead in plus/minus.

2. Anze Kopitar

3. Jonathan Toews

Jack Adams Award

1. Jon Cooper

2. Patrick Roy

3. Claude Julien

Let me be clear. When you turn a team around like Patrick Roy did in Colorado, you deserve coach of the year. When you turn a team around like Michel Therien did in Montreal last year, you don't deserve a nomination. The Jack Adams award is flaud. If Therien didn't get nominated last year, Roy is winning this year. Plus Cooper had a lot less to work with in Tampa Bay when you account the Stamkos injury

2014 Stanley Cup Playoff Picks

Sorry Flyers :( #GoHabsGo

Also I had the Sharks winning the Cup as my preseason pick. The great part about the Stanley Cup Playoffs is that all 16 teams have a chance to win. Buckle Up.

2014 NFL Mock Draft: Picks 1-10

If you haven't absorbed enough NFL Draft information since the end of December, then you have come to the right place!

The Draft is the most exciting point of any offseason. The biggest offseason and preseason story lines are how are the rookies going to impact their teams and should they succeed in their careers, the first year is always well remembered among legends.

1. HOUSTON TEXANS:
                               Jadeveon Clowney/DE (South Carolina)

Some players are NFL ready. Some are not. Some are more likely to fail than succeed in the pros. Some are gems found in late rounds. Then theres players like Clowney. The definite elite players who are simply the players YOU DO NOT PASS UP ON. Luck, Peyton, O.J., Elway, etc. To build a good team you need balance. The Texans lacked in one position last year and it certainly wasn't the defensive line. To win championships, you need to be exceptional. Clowney would make them exceptional. Do something great, Houston.

Will it happen: Yes

2. ST. LOUIS RAMS (thru Washington):
                                       Greg Robinson/OT (Auburn)

Will it happen: Yes

3. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS:
                                      Johnny Manziel/QB (Texas A&M)

People have such a negativity toward Manziel due to his "partying" or "lack of focus". The dude is an absolute stud. Some players are cocky and have nothing to back it up like Richard Sherman a year ago. Manziel has a confidence I have never seen before and knows he still has more work to do. He is as electric as RGIII and can sling it just as well. Oh but he's short? People said the same thing about Russell Wilson, and he wears a ring.

Will it happen: No. I believe they will draft Bridgewater.

4. CLEVELAND BROWNS:
                                   Blake Bortles/QB (Central Florida)

I would just like to offer my condolences to Cleveland fans. You guys have suffered enough. God's speed.

Will it happen: 50/50 on Bortles or Mack.

5. OAKLAND RAIDERS:
                                  Teddy Bridgewater/QB (Louisville)

Will it happen: No. They will take Manziel if Teddy is taken. But knowing Oakland they will take a towel boy.

6. ATLANTA FALCONS:
                                  Khalil Mack/OLB (Buffalo)

Mack is the 3rd best player in this draft behind Clowney and Robinson. I don't know why but there is just something telling me Atlanta will trade this pick...

Will it happen: Probably not. Mack will probably be taken before this by someone.

7. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS:
                                  Sammy Watkins/WR (Clemson)

Best receiver in the draft. With Williams out, Bucs will need to reload to give McCown someone to throw to.

Will it happen: Yes

8. MINNESOTA VIKINGS:
                                  Mike Evans/WR (Texas A&M)

Will it happen: Yes

9. BUFFALO BILLS:
                                 Jake Matthews/OT (Texas A&M)

Bills ranked bottom 5 in QB hits in 2013.

Will it happen: Doubt it. Matthews will probably be taken earlier. He is the 4th best player behind Mack.

10. DETROIT LIONS:
                                  Ha-Ha Clinton Dix/FS (Alabama)

Will it happen: Yes

Alex Ovechkin: The Oskar Kokoshka of Sports

Look at this.

The "face" of the NHL.

We have all seen the .gif of Ovi not moving against the Rangers almost as if someone was playing NHL 14 and they're controller disconnected. Well it happened again Tuesday night in the Caps 5-0 blowout loss to the Stars. The Caps are 1 game out of the Playoffs and won't make it playing like that. Every other team has a push. They know they're destined to fail.

He is DEAD LAST in the entire league in plus/minus. So technically, you can say he is the least productive player in the NHL. The league leader in goals. The worst team player.

Nobody questions his talent. He is arguably still the most talented player in the world. But the most prestigious individual award in sports goes to the most valuable player 'to his team'. The player who allows more goals than scores more than any other player is far from it.

There are two major figures of a sport that certainly needs it. The other one is a girl trapped in a man's body who isn't nearly as fun to watch as Ovi, and his team is even less fun to watch win. Hockey fans everywhere should hope Alex The Great wakes up one day, before his inevitable return to Russia.

Lazy people don't usually become famous with the exception of Paris Hilton and the entire Kardashian family. So we will just compare him to Oskar, the "Hey Arnold" character who liked to eat pickles. Fitting since they're both communists.

Week of Streaks

Two people who never really have the national attention certainly got it for their new records. One that should get more attention than it is receiving, and one that may sum up the Phillies season.

Phils outfielder Ben Revere set a Major League record for most consecutive ABs to start a career without a home run. According to Sports Illustrated, he is now chasing these records:

1,559 – most career PA without a home run since integration, including pitchers (Don Sutton, 1966-1988, not counting 24 homerless PA in the postseason)
1,887 – most PA to start a career without a home run since integration (Greg Gross, 1973-1977)
2,073 – most career PA without a home run in the modern era (Tom Oliver, 1930-1933)
2,592 - most PA to start a career without a home run, all-time (Emil Verban, 1944-1950, not counting 19 homerless PA in the 1944 World Series)
2,593 – most career PA without a home run, all-time (Dave Eggler, 1871-1885)
3,605 – longest homerless streak, all-time (Tommy Thevenow, 1926-1938)*

The other streak, broken last night was NBA referee Dick Bavetta appeared for his 2,633rd consecutive assignment, dating back to 1975 when his refereeing career began. This number surpassed Cal Ripken Jr.'s "Ironman" streak of consecutive games played for the Orioles.

Dick, I hope you enjoy your praise today. You deserve it. I leave you with the greatest wizard of all time, congratulating you.
